Groom's Guide: How to Tie a Tie on Wedding Ceremony

Wedding neckties, bow ties and wedding cravats are the most popular style main options for groom on the wedding ceremony. This guide has got everything grooms need to know to transform into a nattily attired on the big day.

Groom neckties

Groom neck ties

Neck ties come in two forms, a standard neck tie that's normally 9cm wide and a skinny tie.

Groom skinny ties

Skinny ties should be tied in a simple four-in-hand knot whereas a normal tie would look best tied in a windsor knot, paired with a slim-fit suit and a wide lapelled shirt. This is best if you want a modern groomswear look.

Groom bow ties

The bow tie can be worn casually, with bright colors and dramatic patterns, to give your outfit (May be you are also interested in The Groom's Outfits Guide) a pop of color. And for more formal wedding, the classic black bow tie is still the staple. Go glamorous and pair a black, satin bow tie with a tuxedo. For a chic and stylish look, pair a textured bow tie with a brown woollen suit.

Steps:
  • Start by draping the bow tie around your neck so it rests flat on your chest. One end should be slightly longer than the other. If you are right handed, it may be easier to have the shorter end on your right-hand side.
  • Move the longer end of the bow tie over the shorter end.
  • Take the same end (the longer end) and bring it up and over the loop, between your neck and the bow tie.
  • Fold the shorter end sidewise so it resembles the shape of a bow tie.
  • Bring the longer end over the bow shape you just created and loop it back behind the bow tie.
  • Discover the “tunnel” created behind the bow tie and loop the longer end through it.
  • Tighten the knot by holding both ends and pulling slightly.

Cravats are more popular for formal weddings. Cravats can also be worn with a three-piece suit. Pair a pale pink cravat with a navy blue suit for a timeless look. Cravats are usually more expensive though, which is worth bearing in mind if you are on a tight budget. Most cravats are worn with wing collar shirts, though normal shirts can also be used so don't be concerned if you can't find one.
