How to Make Paper Chinese Spring Lanterns

The Spring Lantern Festival is the culminating event of the Chinese New Year celebration. Like the Chinese New Year, the date for the Spring Lantern Festival is set by the lunar calendar. It is held on the 15th day of the first lunar month of the year. Brightly colored lanterns decorate homes, stores and parks on this day. You can bring the fun and festivity of this holiday to your own home by making paper Chinese Spring lanterns.

Step 1. Cut the paper to your desired size. An 8.5 x 11 works is best size for most purposes, but different dimensions are possible. Mini lanterns can be made with pieces of paper that measure 4 inches by 6 inches.

Step 2. Fold the paper in half lengthwise, making a crease down the fold.

Step 3. Cut the paper to create slats in the lantern. With the fold facing you, measure one inch from the left side. Cut at the fold through both layers of paper. Stop cutting at least one inch away from the opposite edge. Continue cutting slats, spacing them one inch apart, till you reach the other end of the paper.

Step 4. Glue the lantern together by taking one end and rolling it over to the other. Apply the glue stick to the slates on each end and stick them together. Use the paperclips to hold the ends in place as the glue dries.

Step 5. Create a handle with a contrasting color by cutting a piece of paper 1 inch by 6 inches. Apply the glue stick to the ends of the strip and then attach it to the inside of the top of the lantern.

Step 6. Add light to your lantern by placing a battery-powered tealight under it.
